The Salford Chocolatier – a logo refresh for an artisan chocolate maker
When I met Amanda, The Salford Chocolatier, she was clearly a very creative woman and already had a logo that she had designed, with a traditional almost antique style. It echoed the historical and traditional nature of being an Artisan chocolate producer with beautiful hand-made chocolates that are made fundamentally the same way as they have done for generations. Her vision for the brand was very clear.
Amanda felt that something was not right with the design she had and we discussed it over several coffees one rainy morning. One of the major problems was when reduced to the smallest size the original logo had the word ‘Salford’ dominate the design. We had to make chocolatier the dominant word and add features that were less generic and more about the chocolate business. Hence the Cacau bean came into the design, it was a decorative and functional graphic that we could use within the logo or on its own as its own graphic element that was relevant to the product she was selling.

One of the other issues was that there were no variations in the design, something that could fit in narrow spaces for example, reducing the circular logo to fit a wide and narrow space would make the logo inproportionate and too small to read.
Finally the option to change the background colour from black to white gave her a much wider variation and flexibility of the visual identity together with a simple colour palette of black-gold-red and white.

In the deliverables I gave her quite a wide range of options in her logo brand kit for both print and web purposes in different variations and formats that both she and professional creatives could use going forward. I added an email signature in the two background colour variations, business card and artwork so she could source her own printer. I also provided single colour logos that could be used as a faded watermark on photos for her marketing in this bespoke package, not forgetting a one page style guide so that others can keep the brand looking consistent.
